Heating and AC Repair in Austin

Meritt HVAC Repair fixes central air conditioners, heat pumps, gas furnaces, electric furnaces, and the air handlers and ducts that connect them. The service area takes in bungalows in Hyde Park, ranch houses in Allandale and Windsor Park, older homes in Old West Austin and Travis Heights, and row houses and condos at Mueller.

Repairs cover the outdoor condenser, the indoor coil and blower, the furnace burner and its controls, heat strips, the drain line and the thermostat wiring. Failed capacitors and contactors, condenser fan motors that stop spinning, blower motors that hum, clogged drains, frozen coils, furnace igniters and heat pump defrost controls are all regular repairs. If the system blows warm air when it should cool, or cool air when it should heat, call (737) 295-1994.

Home Heating and Cooling Systems

Most houses in Austin run one of a handful of system types, and each one has its own set of parts that wear out:

  • A split system with a central air conditioner outside and a gas furnace inside, with the cooling coil sitting on top of the furnace
  • A heat pump outside paired with an indoor air handler that carries electric heat strips for backup
  • A central air conditioner with an electric air handler and heat strips, common in apartments and condos
  • A dual fuel system, where a heat pump does most of the work and a gas furnace takes over as backup
  • A high efficiency condensing furnace with plastic vent pipes and its own condensate drain
  • Variable speed and two stage equipment run by communicating thermostats and control boards

Indoor equipment lands in the attic, a hall closet or the garage, depending on the house. Attic installs hide problems such as a sagging duct, a rusted drain pan or a blower that has started to squeal. Closet installs leave little room around the filter rack and the drain trap, and a condensate pump in a closet can quit without anyone noticing until water reaches the floor.

HVAC Repair Questions

Why are my HVAC vents sweating?
Vents sweat when cold supply air meets warm, moist air in the room or the attic. A grille that gets colder than the dew point of the air around it collects water. Low airflow makes the air leaving the vent colder, so a dirty filter or a weak blower makes it worse. Ducts that leak or have lost their insulation in the attic cause the same thing at the ceiling.
Does HVAC mean heat pump?
No. HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and it covers every type of system that heats or cools a home. A heat pump is one kind of HVAC system, one that both heats and cools with the same outdoor unit. A gas furnace with a central air conditioner is another kind, and it is just as common in Austin.
Why is my HVAC drain pan full of water?
A pan full of water means the condensate is not draining. The usual cause is a clogged drain line, often from algae that grows in the warm, wet line. A condensate pump that has failed, a trap that has filled with sludge, or a line that has sagged can do the same. If the pan has a float switch, the system shuts off before it overflows.
Why is my HVAC vent rattling?
A rattling vent usually means a loose register or grille, a damper inside the boot that has come loose, or debris in the duct. Rattling that started suddenly at every vent can mean the blower is moving air harder than it should, often because a return is blocked or a filter is packed. A rattle from inside the air handler itself points to the blower wheel or a loose panel.
Can a dirty air filter break your AC?
It can lead to failures. A packed filter cuts airflow, and the indoor coil gets so cold that it freezes. The compressor then runs under strain, and the blower motor works harder. Over a season, that can shorten the life of the motor and the compressor and cause drain problems as the ice melts. Changing the filter on schedule is the simplest way to avoid it.
Can an AC act as a heater?
A heat pump can. It is an air conditioner with a reversing valve that runs the cycle backward in winter, pulling heat from outside air and moving it indoors. A cooling-only air conditioner cannot heat. In those systems the heat comes from a furnace or from electric heat strips in the air handler, and the AC only handles cooling.
